Interplay of Architectural and Engineering Ideas

Aistė Andriušytė

Abstract

It is the creative thought and the way of its fulfilment that determine the architectural shape as a common result of construction. Thus, an architectural idea and a constructional invention are aspects of creative thought and it is often difficult to determine which comes first. The main category defining the architectural space – the opposition of the enshrouded space/enshrouding body – conditions constructional tasks. As soon as the motif – the order – for the certain shape of space is decided, the method for implementation has to be selected. To sum up, it can be said that formation of an architectural object is a joint process in the sense of both a project and an implementation. All factors have influence on one another during this process: architecture would not exist without the engineering inventions but the constructional thought would not have meaningful basis without the idea of the enshrouded space.
