Jonas Jonušas (Vilniaus Gedimino technikos universitetas)
Abstract
This article deals with the status of Lithuanian language under the influence of the sociocultural context. The article primarily concerns the peculiarities of Lithuanian language usage in the public plane (on the grounds of periodical press). The article discusses the problem of the meaning of Lithuanian language to the cultural identification and attempts to prove that mother tongue criterion is very meaningful in the whole sociocultural context. The article assigns a special reference to those cultural values which reflect the official status of language as the most important factor in strengthening cultural awareness of the nation. Various quotations from prewar periodical press are used to illustrate the meaning of language learning doctrine (which was continually improved). The argument undertaken in the paper is illustrated with first-hand examples of various periodical sources selected by the author.
