The Association of Lithuanian Serials together with the Lithuanian Research Libra­ry Consortium organized a conference „Scientometric tools: how much known, how well used“, which took place in Vilnius on 29 April 2011. This thematic issue of the journal presents articles prepared on the basis of the conference presentations. In the introductory article, the develo­pment, challenges, and trends in scientific work assessment in Lithuania are concisely reviewed andcontributed articles addressing specific issues related to the assessment of research outputs are briefly introduced.
